Kafelnikov called the moment that became a ‘catastrophe’ for Medvedev in the Australian Open final

Two-time Grand Slam winner, former world number one Eugene Kafelnikov named a specific moment which became “catastrophic” for Daniel Medvedev in the final of the Australian Open against Jannik sinner .

Medvedev lost to Sinner in the final of the Australian Open with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6. The 22-year-old Italian won a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.

— It seemed to me that the disastrous match happened with the score 5:1 in the second match, when Medvedev gave his serve to Sinner. I sat back and waited for this to play into Yannick’s hands. After that match, he felt he could take Medvedev’s serve, and that’s what happened. Sinner began to play more clearly during the reception and began to follow his policies jokingly. Everything changed. If Medvedev had not lost his serves in two sets, then logically the match would have ended in three sets. And that greatly influenced the game,” Kafelnikov said, as quoted by the Championship.

Medvedev lost in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time in his career, the third time at the Australian Open. The 27-year-old Russian won the US Open in 2021.
