Petrova believes Medvedev’s defeat in Melbourne is due to lack of ‘warm-up’ tournaments

Former world number three Nadezhda Petrova spoke about the defeat of Russia Daniel Medvedev in the match with the Italian Jannik sinner in the final of the 2024 Australian Open.

Medvedev lost to Sinner in the final on Sunday with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6. The Russian played four five-set matches at the 2024 Australian Open.

— I think Daniil Medvedev should be happy with his result at the Australian Open, even if it didn’t go very well for him. For the first time, the tennis player decided to participate in a major tournament without warm-up tournaments and was able to prove to himself that even without them he was able to reach the Grand Slam final. But it seems to me that this is precisely what Daniel was missing. However, in Melbourne he had a psychological change. He created additional difficulties, reducing the matches to five sets. I spent a lot of extra energy, but I could have played much more economically,” Petrova told RT.

Medvedev lost in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time in his career, the third time at the Australian Open. In 2021, the 27-year-old Russian won the US Open.
