Olga Morozova, 1974 French Open doubles champion, explains why she thinks of Daniil Medvedev one of the strongest tennis players of our time.
Medvedev lost to Italian Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6. The 22-year-old Italian won a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.
“I think the key moments came in the third set, when Daniil started playing the aggressive tennis he showed in the match against Zverev in the semi-final, abandoning his strategy in the first two, while everything was fine. But the strength ran out and that affected the result. He just couldn’t stand it, and Sinner took full advantage of this. In addition, Yannick has a very simple technique that requires a minimum of energy. And it seemed to me that he intuitively understood all of Medvedev’s ideas. So here, as they say, all the stars aligned and luck was on the side of the Italians.
Daniil can rightfully be considered one of the strongest tennis players of our time. Last season he won five tournaments in a row on different surfaces. Not everyone is capable of it. There can therefore be no criticism. He beat strong opponents, he played 24 hours and almost won the final. This is an incredible achievement,” Morozova said, as quoted by RT.
