Olympic doubles champion Elena Vesnin appreciated the Russian’s performance Daniel Medvedev at the Australian Open.
Medvedev lost to Italian Jannik Sinner in the tournament final on Sunday with a score of 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 4:6, 3:6. The Russian played four five-set matches at the 2024 Australian Open.
— I wasn’t surprised at all by Daniil’s aggressive start in the first sets, I understood that he had certain tactics for the match and knew how to beat Sinner. He entered the match very well and showed confidence, making his opponent nervous. But what caught my attention: the Italian started to improve from match to match, his game revealed itself in the third set. He is probably not even the future, but the present of men’s tennis,” Vesnina told RT.
— Did Medvedev lack energy after the second set?
– This theory also exists. It seems to me that his gas finally ran out in the fifth set, whereas in the previous games, he was still playing and putting pressure on Yannick. But I had the feeling that he might not have enough strength in the fourth set, when he failed to convert an important break point at 3:3,” Vesnina added.
Medvedev lost in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time in his career, the third time at the Australian Open. In 2021, the 27-year-old Russian won the US Open.
