Ukraine loses to the USA 0:2 after the first match day of the Davis Cup
Ukrainian Alexey Krutykh commented on the defeat in the match against Sebastian Korda in the qualifying playoffs Davis Cup 2024.
“I knew what to expect in a confrontation with a player of Sebastian Korda’s level. I had experience playing against an opponent who was in the top 20 in the world rankings, so I understood perfectly well how high a level Sebastian would demonstrate. So he didn’t surprise me with anything. Moreover, I didn’t really count on being able to play three sets, although, of course, I was in the mood for a fight and had a certain tactical plan.”
“We discussed everything with the captain and came to the conclusion that I shouldn’t try to break through him, because such a strategy leaves me very little chance. But if I concentrate on holding the ball, playing through the right, then he may have problems. And so it happened. He was forced to play the game and it was felt that he did not understand very well what to do. Of course, his level allowed him to cope with this situation. In the third set he played his games superbly.”
“I felt tired. If in the first set I was hampered by anxiety, then in the second I found balance and became convinced of my abilities. But in the third there was less strength. This played a key role. It somehow all came together: fatigue and excitement that appeared at some point. The defeat is disappointing, but I am pleased with what I managed to do. I hope this experience will make me stronger.”
Krutykh lost to Korda in three sets (3:6, 7:6(3), 4:6). Then the American team achieved a second victory: Christopher Eubanks beat Vyacheslav Belinsky in two sets.
The match between Ukraine and the USA takes place on the hard courts of the SEB Arena in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. Today, February 2, the match will continue with a doubles match. The first racket of Ukraine Vitaly Sachko in tandem with Ilya Beloborodko will fight with the duo Austin Krajicek / Rajeev Ram.
