The Chilean fell 6-0 and 6-3 to Oscar Otte and waved goodbye to Serbia on his debut. Dominic Thiem, a pupil of Nicolás Massú, also suffered a loss in the tournament, in what was their first ATP encounter in over 10 months.
Alejandro Tabilo (91st) bids farewell to Belgrade on his debut. The Chilean-Canadian could not against Oscar Otte (67th) and lost in the first round of the tournament 6-0 and 6-3 . Jano had reached the ATP 250 by invitation after his major South American tour earlier this year.
The first set was a nightmare for Tabilo. Uncomfortable from the first minute, the Chilean could never step forward and fight the games . Slow, very superficial with his shots and staggered, the scorer was getting more and more against him. And he could never overthrow it.
Lost 6-0 almost unintentionally and broke his racquet when the set slipped away from him for good. The frustration was understandable, since at no time was he able to compete. He always hit softer, ran slower, and missed more. Very low percentages in the first services on points won on the second serve and without even a chance to break, upset him when he went to sit on the chair.
But this discomfort caused him to reset himself. changed attitude and he came out on second with a mentality much closer to what the southpaw usually shows . The legs didn’t feel as heavy anymore and the kicks were much closer to the lines. Thus, he managed to keep the partial even in the first games. This abysmal difference compared to the first set no longer existed.
But this parity did not last the whole quarter. A break against at 2-3 and service , was the final blow for Alejandro. With the advantage, the German ended up securing the set and the match. Final 6-3 which allows Otte to qualify for the round of 16.
Thus, Tabilo’s week in Belgrade ends early. The Chilean suffered the level change between the Challenger and ATP tournaments and this undoubtedly affected the intercontinental trip between the United States and Serbia as well.
Now Alejandro is waiting for his chance to qualify for next week’s ATP tournaments. From Munich it is two casualties from entering, while from Estoril only one .
Thiem falls after 10 months without competition at ATP level
Another who also fell during the day, was the student of Nicolás Massú. Dominic Thiem (54th) was unable to celebrate his return to the circuit after a 10-month break due to a wrist injury and lost to Australian John Millman (80th) . It was a tough match for the Austrian who spent two and a half hours on the main court at the Belgrade Open.
The marker was in the hands of Oceanic Per 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4 . Expected result, since Thiem arrived almost without rhythm in Serbia. Former world number three he had not played a match on the ATP Tour since playing the Mallorca Open in June 2021 just after Roland-Garros.
During this eleven month period, he had operations, relapses and a lot of kinesiological work. In fact, he only played one tournament, in the Challenger category, on March 29. In Marbella, he fell in the first round against Argentinian Pedro Cachín.
