By the middle of this week, the “thousand” in Doha will reach the equator of the path of competition. On Wednesday, February 14, the 1/8 finals of the tournament will be played. In one of them, our Ekaterina Alexandrova will face the first racket in the world – the Polish Iga Szwiatek. This will be the fourth face-to-face between tennis players at the professional level, and so far the advantage is not on the Russian’s side.
After an unsuccessful performance at the Australian Open (Szwiatek withdrew in the 1/16 finals), Iga played on the tour only at the current “thousandth” in Doha. The 22-year-old Pole missed the first round match of the tournament as the top seed. And in the second round, Swiatek very confidently faced Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea, losing only two games to her opponent (6:1, 6:1).
Ekaterina Alexandrova is showing quality tennis at the start of the 2024 season. In Adelaide, Australia, the Russian reached the semi-finals, and in Linz, Austria, she even fought for the title, but in both cases she lost to Latvian Elena Ostapenko. Alexandrova, 29, arrived at the thousandth event in Doha as the 19th racket in the world. However, at present, Ekaterina has already improved her ranking on the WTA Tour by two positions, becoming the third racket from Russia, after Daria Kasatkina and Lyudmila Samsonova. In the first round of the current tournament, the Russian defeated the Bulgarian Victoria Tomova (7:6, 6:3). But at the stage of the 1/16 finals, Alexandrova had to play three sets against her compatriot Erika Andreeva (6:0, 3:6, 6:1).
As of 2021, Swiatek and Aleksandrova meet once per season. In their first meeting in Melbourne, the Russians were stronger – 6:4, 6:2. But the next two matches ended in favor of the Polish player, but in three sets: in Ostrava – 7:6, 2:6, 6:4 and in Madrid – 6:4, 6:7, 6:3.
