Eleventh racket in the world Elena Ostapenko representing Latvia, refused to shake hands with the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka after losing in the 1/8 finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha.
On February 1, the Latvian Seimas adopted amendments to the law on sports, according to which Latvians are prohibited from competing with Russians and Belarusians in team sports, regardless of whether these athletes have neutral status.
The meeting between Ostapenko and Azarenka ended with a score of 6:0, 6:3 in favor of the Belarusian tennis player. After the end of the match, the athletes approached the net, Ostapenko did not offer his hand for a handshake, but rather held out his racket. Azarenka refused to hold out her racket in response.
In the quarterfinals, Azarenka will meet world number one Iga Szwiatek of Poland.
