tennis fans Novak Djokovic released a petition calling on the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the US government to allow the former world rankings leader to play in the US Open.
Djokovic has previously said he will not be vaccinated against coronavirus for a tournament in the United States, where a vaccination certificate is required. US Open organizers included the Serb in the list of tournament participants but said they would respect the US government’s stance on travel to the country by unvaccinated non-US citizens.
“At this point in the pandemic, there is absolutely no reason not to allow Djokovic to play at the US Open 2022. The US government and the USTA must work together to allow him to play. If unvaccinated American players can play, Djokovic, as one of the legends of the game, should also be allowed to play, according to the petition, which has already been signed by more than 12,000 people.
The US Open is scheduled to take place in New York from August 29 to September 11.
