Unusual: a Spanish tennis player gets angry and asks to change courts at the Chile Open

Roberto Carballes Baena claimed responsibility for what happened in the first set against Corentin Moutet. He charged that “the ball doesn’t bounce.”

The Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena and the Frenchman Corentin Moutet host one of the most attractive duels of the round of 16 of the Chile Open. The match between the two started after 10:30 p.m. this Monday and the few participants who remained for the clash were able to observe an unusual situation.

In the eighth game of the first set, at a key moment when Carballes Baena was serving 30-40, the ball didn’t bounce, so the Tenerife native simply hit the air with his racket in an attempt to respond. The curious situation quickly went viral on social networks.

Of course, the Spaniard did not take it with humor. In fact, he was outraged: he demanded that the supervisor come and even request a change of court. Note that this match is played on the main stage of the tournament. This claim was made to the dismay of the public and his own rival, in one of the biggest controversies so far in the competition.

After what happened, the Frenchman took advantage of the Spaniard’s frustration and closed everything with a 6-3 in the first set.

The terrain is a theme

But this is not the only complaint that has been made about the state of the land. Pedro Martínez, who in the previous rounds had beaten the Italian Francesco Passaro, suffered a resounding fall while playing. For the same reason, he was also critical of the state of the clay at San Carlos de Apoquindo: “The track is a little soft. There are times when you stick your leg in and make a hole, and you have to stop to fix it. “It becomes uncomfortable and dangerous, because you can get your foot stuck like what happened to me in the fall.”

It should be noted that the ground had to be redone this year, which explains why it still needs compacting.
