Daniil Medvedev: “I’m sure I can defend the title at least once in my career, but time is running out”

Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev said he was convinced that at least once in his career he would be able to win the same ATP tournament two years in a row.

Medvedev began his title defense at the Dubai tournament on Tuesday by beating Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko in the first round with a score of 6:3, 7:5. The 28-year-old Russian has won 20 tournaments, including the US Open, but has yet to successfully defend his title.

“I’d like to think that doesn’t put any extra pressure on me.” Honestly, I want to defend my title in a tournament at least once in my career. I’m pretty sure it will happen, but time is running out, so I’ll try to make it happen here. It won’t be easy, there are many great tennis players here, but I hope I succeed,” Medvedev said in an interview after the match.

Medvedev’s next opponent will be determined based on the results of the match between Sumit Nagal (India) and Lorenzo Sonego (Italy).
