In the semi-finals with the best ranking of his career: Alejandro Tabilo takes a step forward at the Chile Open

Nobody stops lefties in Santiago. In the round of 16, he eliminated Luciano Darderi, recent ATP champion from Cordoba, 6-0 and 7-5.

The superb 2024 of Alejandro Tabilo (51st) adds another chapter. After his title in Auckland and his two Davis Cup victories, he must now repeat his best performance at the Chile Open. This afternoon, he ensured his presence in the semi-final of the ATP capital for the second time in his career. He beat Luciano Darderi (80th) 6-0 and 7-5 in one hour and 15 minutes of play.

It was a special match, between two players who were experiencing the best moments of their careers. Tabilo, thanks to his title in New Zealand and his stellar position in the world rankings. Darderi, for a year in which he lifted the ATP trophy in Cordoba and put his name on the front page of South American tennis. Of course, the Argentine is also making news with his decision to represent Italy.

And even if we expected a balanced duel, the first set was everything for the Chilean. In 29 minutes, he closed the set with a powerful game, which surprised the European, who could never control Tabilo’s shots. The score says it all: 6-0 for the world number 51.

In the second round, the sensations changed. These catastrophic differences have been kept to a minimum. It was only in the final stretch of the partial that it was possible to break this logic. It was the Chilean who broke his rival’s serve. He did it at a time when there was no margin. So much so that this punishment meant passage to the semi-finals. 7-5 to shake his fist and replicate his 2022 performance, where he ended up falling in precisely that instance.
