Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev did not deserve to be disqualified for insulting the referee during the semi-final of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, former world number two singles player Svetlana Kuznetsova said.
On Friday, Rublev was disqualified for insulting a linesman during a match against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. In the third set, with the end of the rally, after which the score became 6:5 in favor of Bublik, Rublev shouted at the line referee. Another linesman, who was nearby, heard an insult to his colleague in the athlete’s Russian speech and immediately turned to the chief referee and supervisor.
“It is a shame that in addition to the disqualification, Andrey was also deprived of very important ranking points, as well as money. I didn’t even know that this happens when you get disqualified in a tournament. We are all human and we all have the right to make mistakes. In my opinion, other guys often behave much worse. Towards the public, for example. But how is a judge different from a spectator? Is the public not worthy of respect either?
Does the word “moron” deserve disqualification? I think so, of course not. Do not rush to judge anyone, Andrei understands everything and, I am sure, he will draw his own conclusions,” Kuznetsova wrote on the Telegram channel.
According to the regulations, after being suspended, Rublev will lose all points earned and prize money from the tournament.
