Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev received $150,000 and 200 points for reaching the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai.
Last week, Rublev was disqualified for insulting a linesman during his semi-final against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. In the third set, with the end of the rally, after which the score became 6:5 in favor of Bublik, Rublev shouted at the line referee. Another linesman, who was nearby, heard an insult to his colleague in the athlete’s Russian speech and immediately turned to the chief referee and supervisor.
According to the regulations of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Rublev had to lose all prizes and points won during the competition, and thus leave the top 5 of the world rankings. On Monday, we learned that the Russian retained fifth place.
— The ATP has reviewed Andrey Rublev’s appeal, filed after the player was withdrawn from the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai. During the review process, player and official testimony was considered and all available video and audio material was studied.
The appeal committee concluded that in addition to losing the match, the usual penalties for non-compliance, namely the loss of ranking points and prize money for the entire tournament, would be disproportionate in this case. Thus, Rublev retains points for the semi-finals and prize money for the tournament,” INews quoted an ATP representative as saying.
