The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) acted with humanity towards the Russian Andrei Rublev who was ultimately not deprived of ranking points and prize money after an incident with a judge at a tournament in Dubai, Russia’s Honored Coach Viktor Yanchuk told .
As an ATP representative told INews, Rublev retained more than $150,200 for reaching the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, despite the incident with the referee. The appeal committee concluded that in addition to losing the match, the usual penalties for non-compliance, namely the loss of ranking points and prize money for the entire tournament, would be disproportionate in this case. On Monday, it became known that Rublev remained in fifth place in the ATP rankings.
– Very good news, we did well! I think Andrei blames himself for not knowing how to hold back in this match. It was just in the heat of the moment, emotions on a big score. ATP acted humanely and accepted the situation. Of course, there is no need to punish Rublev harshly, let alone deprive him of his prize money,” Yanchuk told .
Last week, Rublev was disqualified for insulting a linesman during his semi-final against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. In the third set, with the end of the rally, after which the score became 6:5 in favor of Bublik, Rublev shouted at the line referee. Another linesman, who was nearby, heard an insult to his colleague in the athlete’s Russian speech and immediately turned to the chief referee and supervisor.
