The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the ban on former world number one Simone Halep from four years to nine months, the Romanian can already participate in tournaments this season, according to the CAS website.
Last September, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that Halep would be suspended for four years. The Romanian woman was charged with two separate counts. The first involved a negative drug test result for the banned substance roxadustat at the 2022 US Open. The second charge was related to discrepancies in the athlete’s biological passport indicators.
— The CAS panel unanimously decided that the four-year period of ineligibility should be reduced to nine months, running from October 7, 2022 to July 6, 2023. The deadline having expired before the appeal can be filed with the TAS, the panel considered it appropriate to publish the operative part of the award as well as a complete press release as soon as possible.
The CAS panel also decided to annul all results obtained by Halep from August 29, 2022 (the date of her positive test) to October 7, 2022, including the confiscation of all medals, titles, ranking points and prize money. Consequently, the appeal filed by ITIA is rejected and that filed by Halep is partially accepted (his request to postpone the start of the suspension to August 29, 2022 is rejected), specifies the press release.
