The Court of Arbitration for Sport has announced a reduction of the sanction for the Romanian tennis player: he can return to activity as soon as possible.
He Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) announced the reduction from four years to nine months in the penalty for doping against Simona Halepformer world number one, so he can get back on the slopes right away.
The tennis player Romania appealed to CAS against the ruling of the International Tennis Federation on September 22, 2023, putting him out of the sport for four years.
In its decision on Tuesday, the Lausanne court ordered the nine-month exclusion applies to the period between October 7, 2022 and July 6, 2023, so that it is fulfilled, although it confirms that all results and awards achieved by Halep during that period have been annulled.

Halep, winner of two Grand Slams in her career (Wimbledon and Roland Garros), was investigated by consumption of roxadustat, a banned substance, during the US Open, in August 2022.
CAS concluded that the consumption of that substance, by the contaminated supplement, the tennis player did not do it on purpose, although he acknowledged “a certain degree of negligence” on its part, which justifies the retention of the penalty, albeit a smaller one.
The decision also orders the ethics court that regulates tennis, ITIA, pay compensation to Halep of 20,000 Swiss francs (20,800 euros) for legal costs.
