Chairman of the State Duma Sports Committee Dmitry Svishchev told that the decision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to allow Russians to participate in the Olympic Games should be attributed to the president of the Russian Tennis Federation (RFF) Shamil Tarpishchev and other officials.
Previously, the ITF decided to admit athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Paris Olympics with a neutral status.
“The decision shows that there are federations that we need to learn from. Both the IOC and other federations are attentive to the admission of Russians. Tennis has one of the most independent federations, they are successful. Nothing happened (because the athletes were allowed in). A tennis family is a closed world, but at the same time very united. At Wimbledon, everyone supported the Russians.
There is no need to neglect the authority of Tarpishchev and our other officials. And the result for our entire eventual Olympic team: a serious statement. Admission to singles and doubles is an independent policy that goes against IOC recommendations not to allow Russians to participate in team competitions.
— Will the ITF reduce quotas, given the temporary suspension of ROC membership?
“Since Russians occupy leading positions in world tennis, we must count on the maximum number of quotas,” Svishchev told .
Each National Olympic Committee can receive four quotas in each of the singles, two quotas in each of the doubles and one in the mixed doubles.
The selection for the Olympic Games will be made based on the audiences which will be published on June 10, the day after the end of Roland Garros. To qualify for a quota, tennis players must meet ITF criteria, including participation in the Davis Cup (for men) and the Billie Jean King Cup (for women). However, exceptions to the rules are possible.
The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
