President of the Russian Tennis Federation (RFT) Shamil Tarpishchev told that the decision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to admit Russian tennis players to participate in the Olympic Games is only the beginning of the journey.
Previously, the ITF decided to admit athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Paris Olympics with a neutral status.
“This decision is just the beginning of the journey. After the ITF decision, I can say: this is how things should be. We must play, tennis must exist, all our sports must exist. The only important thing is that we are not placed in unacceptable conditions,” Tarpishchev told .
Each National Olympic Committee can receive four quotas in each of the singles, two quotas in each of the doubles and one in the mixed doubles.
The selection for the Olympic Games will be made based on the audiences which will be published on June 10, the day after the end of Roland Garros. To qualify for a quota, tennis players must meet ITF criteria, including participation in the Davis Cup (for men) and the Billie Jean King Cup (for women). However, exceptions to the rules are possible.
The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
