Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells (United States) on the eve of the first round match, saying he was not ready to play at the highest level.
“It is with great sadness that I have to leave this incredible tournament behind.
Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love playing here in Indian Wells. This is also one of the reasons why I came to the USA very early to train and prepare. I have worked and trained hard and you all know I passed the test this weekend, but I am not ready to perform at the highest level in such an important event.
It’s not an easy decision, it’s really difficult, but I can’t lie to myself or to thousands of fans. “I will miss you all and I am sure the tournament will be a great success,” Nadal wrote on the social network.
The 37-year-old Spaniard, who could retire after the 2024 season, returned to competition in Brisbane in January after almost a year out due to injury. Already there, the tennis player suffered another injury, which is why he had to miss the Australian Open.
Nadal is a 22-time Grand Slam singles champion.
The Masters Series tournament at Indian Wells takes place March 6-17.
