The ITF representative made a clarification on the issue of admitting “neutral athletes”
Tennis players from Russia and Belarus will be able to compete in doubles Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.
“The current international tennis policy, in force since March 2022, allows Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in singles and doubles as individual neutral athletes. Doubles places are allocated based on their individual tour results (measured by ranking) and not their country’s results,” an ITF spokesperson said.
Earlier, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) confirmed the admission of tennis players from Russia and Belarus as “neutral” athletes to the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. All tennis players must meet the eligibility and eligibility requirements of the ITF Rules.
Let us note that on March 1, 2022, the ITF board suspended the membership of Russia and Belarus in the federation and suspended these countries from participating in international team competitions. All ITF events in these countries have also been cancelled.
Let us recall that at the beginning of December 2023, the IOC Executive Committee decided to admit participants from Russia and Belarus in the status of “individual neutral athletes” to the 2024 Olympic Games. The IPC today published the regulations for the participation of neutral Paralympic athletes at the Paris Paralympic Games.
Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvey Bedny called the above-mentioned IOC decision “irresponsible.” Later, the head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, spoke about plans to assemble his own admission database regarding “neutral” athletes admitted to the 2024 Olympic Games.
Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia fired rockets and aerial bombardment of most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has continued for the 742nd day.
