Soviet and Russian tennis player Andrei Chesnokov told that he had to come to tournaments in the United States with a bag full of food.
Chesnokov ended his career in 2000. The Russian is the owner of two Masters tournament titles in Monte Carlo (1990) and Montreal (1991). With the Russian national team he became a Davis Cup silver medalist in 1995.
—I was once asked in the 1980s how I planned to compete in tournaments in the United States. I replied that it depends on how I clear customs in America. Nobody understood my answer. It was like this: my mother filled my entire bag with food. She put 15 cans of stew, sausages, and for a month and a half in the USA I ate all that. If they took it away from me at customs, then I was hungry.
Imagine: I came to have breakfast in a hotel in a suit in forty degree heat! The Americans were in shorts and T-shirts, and I was in suits. I put it on to fill my pockets well with the food I ate during the day,” Chesnokov told .
