The Association of Tennis Professionals believes that athletes are not responsible for the war in Ukraine.
The Association of Tennis Professionals believes that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be held accountable for the war in Ukraine unleashed by the Putin regime.
The organization condemned the decision of the organizers of Wimbledon 2022 to ban athletes from the aggressor country from participating in the tournament. According to the ATP, this is discrimination, which will create a detrimental precedent.
“Our sport prides itself on operating on the core principles of merit and fairness, with players competing as individuals for a place in ATP -based tournaments.
We believe that today’s unilateral decision by Wimbledon and the LTA (British Tennis Association – ed.) To exclude players from Russia and Belarus from this competition is unfair and could set a disastrous precedent for the game.
Ethnic discrimination violates our Wimbledon agreement, which states that player participation is based solely on ATP rankings. It is important to emphasize that players from Russia and Belarus will continue to be allowed to compete in ATP tournaments under the neutral flag, ”the ATP said in a statement.
