Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev admitted that if he were Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, he would flee the court in the event of a bee invasion.
The quarterfinal match of the Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells between Alcaraz and Zverev was interrupted due to a swarm of bees. With the score tied 1-1 in the first set, insects surrounded Alcaraz as he prepared to serve. The Spaniard tried to chase away the bees, then drew the judge’s attention to this. Both players then left the field. Chair umpire Mohamed Layani announced that play was suspended until further notice. The match continued after about two hours and ended with Alcaraz winning.
— What did you think when you saw bees on the field today during one of the semi-finals?
— I’m a little afraid of insects, to be honest. When a bee flies, everyone tries not to move. But bees generally don’t bite. I usually sit quietly for a few seconds and then shoo her away. If I were them, I’d probably leave the field. It’s a crazy situation. I don’t think this has ever happened in tennis. When I saw it on TV, I was like, “Wow, okay, let’s see how it goes.” »Then about 10 minutes later, I saw Sasha (Zverev) come into the locker room. Apparently it didn’t go very well. Yes, it’s incredible. I don’t think this will ever happen again.
— Have you set yourself any goals for this year?
— I did it at the beginning of the year. Time passes so quickly that we forget them. Plus, you’re constantly changing. You travel from one place to another every week. Sometimes you feel worse and sometimes you feel better.
If we’re strictly talking about tennis, then I probably want to be more consistent. For example, I haven’t made the Masters semi-finals since Rome last year. I want to accomplish more. Maybe I want to play fewer tournaments, but be better in the ones I play. The goals, of course, are the most important: the Grand Slam tournaments and the Olympic Games. “I will make an effort there, I will play until I die,” Medvedev told a news conference.
On Friday, Medvedev beat Dane Holger Rune in the quarter-finals of the Masters in Indian Wells. In the semi-final, the Russian will meet the American Tommy Paul.
