Shventek: Since I was one of those who strongly supported Ukraine, we talked about this topic with Kostyuk

The Polish tennis player remembered how hard her Ukrainian colleague experienced the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine

The strongest tennis player in the world Iga Šwiętek commented on her victory over Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals of the tournament WTA 1000 in American Indian Wellsand also spoke about her relationship with the Ukrainian tennis player.

“I’m definitely proud of myself and very happy. I think it was a great match for me today and I have only positive emotions.”

“To be honest, I don’t remember us playing juniors. Did we play once? I don’t even remember. She is a year younger, so we didn’t always play in the same tournaments, but in the main ones, yes. But to be honest, I mean we know each other more from dressing room interactions on the senior Tour than from having played together before.”

“So I wouldn’t say that we have a really strong relationship. It’s more like a relationship with any other player, but I know how she, you know, struggled at the beginning of the war with everything that was going on. So, of course, since I was one of those who strongly supported Ukraine, I think she and I communicated a little more about this topic. But today it was all about tennis, so it didn’t have an impact.”

Let us remind you that 22-year-old Shventek defeated Kostyuk (6:2, 6:1) and reached the final of the tournament in Indian Wells. There, her opponent will be Greek Maria Sakkari, who defeated American Coco Gauff in three sets. The Polish tennis player will fight for the 19th title of her career at the WTA level.

This was the second meeting between Iga and Marta on the court. In the 1/8 finals of Roland Garros 2021, Schwiatek also beat her Ukrainian opponent in two sets.
