Athletistic/Tennis. Starting the year with a long winning streak, spanning multiple surfaces over several months, is a rarity in tennis. And there have been several such winning streaks over the past three decades. One of them was interrupted in Indian Wells, when Jannik Sinner lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals.
16 consecutive victories (Jannik Sinner, 2024 and Roger Federer, 2006):
Sinner has been playing wonderfully since the start of the season. He won his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January and won the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam shortly after. The 22-year-old Italian reached the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and his streak was finally snapped.
Federer also had a blistering start in 2006, winning the Qatar Open and Australian Open. He then reached the final in Dubai but lost to Rafael Nadal in the final. It was the best season in the Swiss tennis player’s career: he won three Grand Slam tournaments and finished the year with an unreal record: 92-5.
17 consecutive victories (Pete Sampras 1997, Novak Djokovic 2013 and Roger Federer 2018)
Sampras was at his peak in 1997, winning the Australian Open for the second time. He then won two more titles in San Jose and Philadelphia, extending his winning streak to 17 matches. That year, the American won two Grand Slam tournaments and also finished the year as world number one.
Djokovic had an excellent start to 2013, winning first the Australian Open and then the Dubai Open. He then reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells, but lost to Juan Martin Del Potro.
Federer won his second consecutive Australian Open in 2018. He then won the ABN Amro Open in Rotterdam and reached the Masters 1000 final in Indian Wells. Once again, Del Potro stops him and wins the final at Indian Wells.
20 consecutive victories (Rafael Nadal, 2022)
In 2022, Nadal came back from 2-0 down against Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final and then also won the title in Acapulco. He then reached the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, but in the main match of the American Masters, his Spaniard was beaten by Taylor Fritz, thus ending a streak of 20 victories.
26 consecutive victories (Djokovic 2020)
Djokovic began by winning a number of tournaments, including the ATP Cup in Australia, the Australian Open and the Dubai Championships. After a break caused by Covid-19 that year, the Serbian won the ATP 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
Djokovic could well have won the US Open, but he was disqualified in his match against Pablo Carreno Busta after Novak hit the referee with the ball.
41 consecutive victories (Djokovic, 2011)
No player in the history of professional tennis has approached the level demonstrated by Djokovic in 2011. Novak had won 41 matches in a row, and at one point in the year it seemed almost impossible that he would ever lose . The Serbian’s incredible run ended in the 2011 French Open semi-final against Federer.
Previously, he won the Australian Open, Dubai Masters, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Masters, Serbia Open, Madrid Masters and Rome Masters. Djokovic’s level was so high that he even beat Nadal on clay in Madrid and Rome.
