Romanian tennis player Simona Halep commented on the statement of the former first racket of the world, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who spoke out against the fact that athletes suspended for violations of anti-doping rules received special invitations to participate in tournaments.
On Tuesday, Halep lost her first match since returning to the WTA Tour after being suspended for anti-doping rule violations. The Romanian lost to Spaniard Paula Badosa in the first round of the Miami tournament in three sets – 6:1, 4:6, 3:6.
“Wozniacki was here earlier today and said people who were absent for the reasons you were should not be given a wild card to compete.”
– Yes, but why did she say that? I did not do anything wrong. I didn’t cheat. I didn’t do any doping. It would therefore be better to read the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) according to which it was a contaminated food additive and not a dope.
I never had anything to do with doping. I’ve never doped, so I’m not a cheater. Thanks to the organizers for giving me a wild card and the opportunity to play in such a major tournament. It was great to be back.
It doesn’t matter if just one person treats me negatively, because there are hundreds of people who give me love, so I will accept it,” Halep said as quoted by The Tennis Letter.
Previously, the CAS partially upheld Halep’s appeal and reduced his suspension for anti-doping rule violations from four years to nine months.
The Romanian dominated the WTA rankings for 64 weeks. She has won two Grand Slam singles tournaments: Roland-Garros 2018 and Wimbledon 2019.
