With big changes: the ATP announces its provisional calendar for 2025

Santiago remains on the circuit, but Argentina loses one of its tournaments. In addition, two Masters 1000s will undergo modifications.

Tennis has been going through years of change. In the midst of a dispute between Saudi Arabia and the Grand Slam for control of the circuit, the ATP announced its 2025 calendar with major changes. Nearly a dozen tournaments will undergo transformations, whether due to the number of players or the dates on which they will be played, five will even disappear.

This follows a previously announced decision by the ATP: better stadiums, better prizes and higher competition. These three factors led to the promotion of some 250 events to the higher category, but also to the removal of five of them from the map, including one in South America.

The regional event that will not appear in 2025 will be the Córdoba ATP who will lose his license after this season, resulting in only three events being held on the continent next year. The South American tour will begin in Buenos Aires (02/10), continue in Rio de Janeiro (02/17) and end with the Chile Open (02/24) which will continue to share the week with the ATP 500 in Acapulco and Dubai.

The Córdoba license will be occupied by the ATP 250 in Mallorca, which is played on grass before Wimbledon. A decision which directly harms competition in the field and which has already sparked criticism. Diego Schwartzman was clear on this subject: “The decision of the ATP Tour to organize a tournament in Argentina and throughout the region is confirmed. I don’t consider taking tournaments and opportunities all over South America to be a good decision. A pain », Wrote the former world eight on social networks.

In addition to the trans-Andean tournament, the events of Estoril, Newport, Atlanta and Lyon will disappear from the circuit in 2025, which was also perceived negatively in the countries concerned. Of course, the United States is the one that generated the least pressure, since it also benefited from these changes. The Dallas tournament will become ATP 500 in 2025 and the Masters 1000 in Cincinatti will take place over two weeks with a field of 96 players, as is currently the case in Indian Wells and Miami. This increase in matches will also occur at the Canadian Masters 1000, which takes place just before the tournament in Ohio.

In Europe, another change will be the ATP 500 moving from Hamburg to the week before Roland Garros, which will undoubtedly affect the attention paid to the European clay court tour that took place after Wimbledon. Without their most important tournament, we will have to see if the players decide to continue playing on clay before going to North American cement. Indeed, the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, which took place this year in February, will move to July next season, just to begin the tour of the north of the continent.

Finally, another notable change is the transformation into ATP 500 in Munich and Doha, which had already been announced in advance. These sites (in addition to Dallas) had fought for the chance to access this category against Santiago and Buenos Aires, which were ultimately rejected by the organizing entity of the circuit.
