On Sunday March 24, the last part of the 1/16 finals of the WTA 1000 tournament will take place in Miami. In one of them, two Russians will compete – Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Ekaterina Alexandrova. With a high probability, the winner of this match will face the first racket in the world, the Polish Iga Szwiatek, in the 1/8 finals.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is the 21st seed in the tournament. In Miami, the 32-year-old Russian started as the 22nd racket in the world, but thanks to reaching the 1/16 finals, she has already improved her place in the WTA rankings by one position. If the Samara native gains the upper hand today, she could return to the top 20 by the end of the week. Pavlyuchenkova has played only one match so far at the ongoing millennium event, defeating American Shelby Rogers in the 1/32 final with a score of 6:2, 6:1.
Ekaterina Alexandrova started the tournament as the 14th seed. The 29-year-old Russian reached the current thousandth racket as the 16th racket in the world, which is her personal best for her entire career. However, Katya has lost a number of ranking points and sits at 18th place in the WTA rankings. At the same time, Alexandrova retained her status as Russia’s third racket, just behind Daria Kasatkina and Lyudmila Samsonova. In the 1/32 final, Ekaterina defeated a rather strong opponent in the person of Croatian Donna Vekic – 6:3, 6:4.
Pavlyuchenkova and Alexandrova have met twice and both times in the quarterfinals. In 2018, at a tournament in Linz, Ekaterina celebrated her victory – 6:3, 7:5. And last season, at a tournament in Tokyo, Anastasia managed to take revenge – 6:2, 7:5.
