On Saturday evening, April 6, the first racket of Russia Daria Kasatkina will compete for a ticket to the final of the prestigious tournament in Charleston (USA) in the 500 category. The opponent of our tennis player will be the American Jessica Pegula, who the 5th ranking on the WTA circuit. The statistics of the confrontations are not in favor of Kasatkina, although Daria officially has one victory.
The tennis players met for the first time at a tournament in Rome in 2021. Then, in the first round, Pegula was stronger in two sets – 7:5, 6:3. Two years later, the Russian and the American faced each other during a tournament in Tokyo. This took place in the quarterfinals, and Jessica won again, and with defeat (6:1, 6:0). In January this year, Kasatkina and Pegula were supposed to face each other in the semifinals in Adelaide, but the American withdrew from this match, and our tennis player was credited with the victory. However, only Jessica won this confrontation directly on the field.
In the current tournament, 30-year-old Pegula has already achieved a great victory by defeating Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-finals. The match proved tenacious, and the American only managed to put the finishing touch on her opponent in the tiebreaker of the deciding set (6:4, 3:6, 7:6). As for Kasatkina, 26, she surprisingly had problems in fights with the little-known Ashlyn Kruger of the United States and Jacqueline Christian of Romania. In the match with the first, Daria managed to lose the second set with a score of 0:6, but then she corrected herself by beating the American 6:1 in the deciding game. During her confrontation with the Romanian in the quarterfinals, Kasatkina, on the contrary, lost the first set in a tiebreaker and then confidently won two games (6:2, 6:3). But in the match against the Ukrainian top seed Angelina Kalinina, the Russian had no problems – 6:1, 6:4.
