On the evening of Saturday, May 18, the winner of the women’s singles will be determined at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tournament in Rome in the WTA-1000 category. In the final match of the “thousandth century”, the two strongest tennis players on the planet will face each other. Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka is the second racket in the world and Poland’s Iga Szwiatek is at the top of the WTA rankings.

In the final of the Roman “thousand”, Iga and Arina will meet for the first time. But this will be the sixth face-to-face between the tennis players on clay. Swiatek won twice in the Stuttgart final (2022 and 2023), the Rome semi-final (2022) and the Madrid final (2024). Sabalenka was stronger in the Madrid final in 2023. In fact, since then the Pole has not lost title matches – 7 matches in a row.
Exactly half of the confrontations between tennis players took place in three sets. The last of them took place at the “Mille” in Madrid two weeks ago. Then Szwiatek won the title in the deciding match tiebreaker – 7:5, 4:6, 7:6. It is interesting that only once, in a confrontation with the Belarusian, Iga won a match in which she lost the first set. It was in the semi-final of the US Open 2022 (3:6, 6:1, 6:4). In other cases, if Szwiatek won the first match, she won the match.
At the moment, the Pole has 20 titles in women’s singles, Sabalenka has 14. This season, Iga has already won three “thousands” – in Doha, Indian Wells and Madrid. Arina won the Australian Open. In Rome, Swiatek did not lose a single set and the Belarusian had a blast just in time for the final. The next battle between tennis players is expected to be fierce and the winner will most likely be determined in three sets.
