Celebrate at least economically: the check that Nicolas Jarry receives after his defeat in the final in Rome

The national tennis player could not beat Alexander Zverev and his first Masters 1000 title will have to continue to wait.

Nicolas Jarry saw his celebration frustrated. The Chilean fell to Alexander Zverev at the Masters 1000 in Rome this Sunday after a difficult presentation at the Foro Italico.

Despite this result, his performance in Italy means a strong progression in the ATP ranking which will become official this Monday and brings significant income to his bank account.

The Chilean, just by reaching the final of the Rome Masters, won an amount of US$556,740. That’s the enormous sum of $498,166,050. The German, meanwhile, by winning the title, won a much bigger prize. As champion, Zverev receives US$1,047,022. Or $938,954,430. HAS

The keys to Jarry’s rise

As the final approached, his coach, the Spaniard César Fábregas, gave the keys to his student’s rise. “I see Nico very well all week. He went less and more every game. He had trained at a very good level in the previous days. “I was ready to have a really good tournament,” he said.

The Iberian recognizes that the level of the Santiago native has improved throughout the tournament. “The first two matches, against the Italians (Stefano Napolitano and Alexandre Muller), were very hard. Also with the counter stands. Nico was able to hold on and continue. He had the attitude and mentality to get them out. Since the match against Muller, he has been looser, with aggressive and dominant tennis,” he added.

Along the same lines, Fábregas adds that it was Jarry’s mentality that kept him in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, when they were on the rise. “He played very good matches against Stefano Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul, who are great players. Nico was in good spirits, physically and with brutal determination. Thanks to this, we are in the final. We are very excited to be able to bring the cup home,” he noted.

“Zverev is a great player, who plays at a high level. But Nico is ready to face it and move the game forward. This Sunday, he will be in full force to compete and fight a complete battle. It is essential that you continue to impose your game and maintain the plan that you are going to propose. It’s a day to leave your skin on the pitch and squeeze every last drop out of it,” concluded the Spaniard.

The curse spreads

After passing the semi-finals, Jarry has already achieved his best performance in a Masters 1000. In fact, in his career he has five Challenger titles and two ATP titles. So far he has not been able to celebrate an ATP 500.

With the title that eluded him in Rome, a 25-year curse is extended. Until now, Chilean tennis had celebrated five M1000s, all achieved by Marcelo Ríos. El Chino was champion in Monte Carlo, Indian Wells, Miami, Rome and Hamburg. After Ríos there were finals, but the trophy never returned to the country again.
