Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva became the youngest semi-finalist at a Grand Slam tournament in the last 27 years, reports the press service of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
On Wednesday, the 17-year-old Russian beat the second racket in the world in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. Arina Sabalenko of Belarus (6:7, 6:4, 6:4) and reached the semi-finals.
She became the youngest semi-finalist at a Grand Slam tournament since Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis, who reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros and the US Open in 1997 at the age of 16 .
Andreeva also became the youngest tennis player to defeat a top-2 opponent in the WTA rankings at a Grand Slam tournament since 16-year-old Australian Jelena Dokic beat Hingis in the first round of Wimbledon in 1999.
Andreeva will compete with Italian Jasmine Paolini, seeded 12th in the tournament, to reach the Roland Garros final.
