The former world number one has continued to donate prize money from tournaments to those affected by the Russian invasion.
Andy Murray continues to help Ukrainian children affected by Russia’s all-out aggression. Remember that immediately after the start of the war, the British tennis player promised to give all the money earned in the tournaments to charity.
To date, the former world’s first racket has raised more than 300 thousand dollars in this way. Murray said he will continue to help in this way, at least until the end of this year.
At the same time, the leadership of some competitions goes to meet the British and his good intentions. So this week the tennis player started the Citi Open tournament in Washington.
Tournament bosses immediately announced that they would double the prize money for the athlete. So, Murray could win $342,800 if he wins the final.
Unfortunately, this did not happen, and the 50th racket of the world unexpectedly lost in the first round to Swede Mikael Imer – 6:7, 6:4, 1:6. However, Murray thanked the leadership of the tournament in Washington for such an initiative.
“It’s brilliant. Thanks to Mark Ein and the whole team for their support. It shows that when players and tournaments work together, really good things can happen,” the ATP press service quoted Murray as saying.
Recall that Andy Murray won the Wimbledon tennis tournament twice: in 2013 and 2016. The Briton won the US Open in 2012.
