World No. 16 Simona Halep advanced to the second round of the Washington Open after defeating Spaniard Cristina Buksa on Monday.

After an early exchange of breaks, Halep took over her opponent’s serve in the sixth game before taking the first set.

The third seed looked equally confident in the second set, taking a 5-2 lead with a double break, but the Spaniard broke twice to level the score at 5-5. Halep regrouped and stopped Buxa’s attempt to come back into the game, winning the game 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hour and 21 minutes.

The 30-year-old has been in incredible form lately, having reached the semi-finals of the last three tournaments: Birmingham, Bad Homburg and Wimbledon.

The former world number one, who won 23 WTA titles in 41 finals, claimed her only title of the season in Melbourne in January.

This is only his second appearance in Washington. In 2017, she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. She will aim to reach the eighth quarter-final this season.

The 71st racket in the world, Anna Kalinskaya, took only 67 minutes to knock out American Madison Brengle, who exceeds her by 10 positions in the standings.

Kalinskaya didn’t get off to a good start as Brengle took her serve in the second game of the first set, but the Russian gradually took control of the set and the match. She broke three times in the first set, then won all six games in the second – 6:3, 6:0.

The 23-year-old Kalinskaya’s best result this season was the semi-final in Guadalajara.

On Wednesday, Kalinska will aim to reach the second quarter-final this year.
