Russian tennis player Anastasia Potapova has been included in the list of athletes admitted to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, reports the press service of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Previously, the IOC list included Daniil Medvedev, Roman Safiullin, Pavel Kotov, Mirra Andreeva and Ekaterina Alexandrova, who accepted the invitation. Andrei Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Daria Kasatkina, Lyudmila Samsonova and Anna Kalinskaya refused. We also learned on Monday that Diana Schneider had accepted the invitation to perform at the Games.
The Russian Tennis Federation (RFF) bid initially also included Aslan Karatsev and Veronika Kudermetova, who were not yet on the list of invitees to the Olympics. Potapova herself was not on the FTR list, so she will probably refuse the invitation.
In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were softened, and in December 2023, IOC chief Thomas Bach said that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who had passed the selection process to the 2024 Summer Games in an individual neutral status. The athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem, and other national symbols.
The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The tennis tournament will be played on clay courts.
