Former British world number one Andy Murray withdrew from the Wimbledon singles tournament.
In June, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) announced that Murray would miss Wimbledon due to back surgery, but this was later denied. The athlete did not make a final decision on his participation until Tuesday, when he was due to play in the first round of Wimbledon against Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.
“Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard to recover from his surgery just over a week ago, Andy has made the very difficult decision not to compete in singles this year. As you can imagine, he is very disappointed, but has confirmed that he will play doubles with Jamie (brother),” a statement from Murray’s team, 37, read, as quoted by The Telegraph.
Murray is a two-time Olympic champion and a three-time Grand Slam singles champion.
