Marketa unexpectedly lost to the world’s 83rd racket
The current champion Wimbledon Marketa Vondrousova started in the main draw of the tournament and sensationally lost in two sets to the 83rd racket of the world, the Spaniard Jessica Bousas Maneiro.
The first set started with a break for the Spaniard, but Marqueta managed to even things out on the court. However, too many unforced errors led to a 4-6 loss in the opening set.
In the second set, things were even worse for Vondrousova – she lost games on her own serve three times and ultimately lost without a chance with a score of 2:6. It is worth noting that in terms of the number of winners in the match, the Czech surpassed Maneiro – 18:11, but in terms of the number of forced errors she “surpassed” her opponent twice (28:14).
For Maneiro, this was her first victory over a top-10 player, and her first in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. In the second round, the Spaniard will face the winner of the pair Cristina Bucsa – Ana Bogdan.
Marketa Vondroušová has resigned as Wimbledon champion. Let us recall that in 2023, the Czech Republic representative beat Ons Jabeur in two sets in the final, and that title was her first in her career at a Grand Slam tournament.
The British Grand Slam tournament will be held from July 1 to 14. In last year’s Wimbledon, the best among Ukrainians was Elina Svitolina, who reached the semi-finals.
