On July 3, 2004, Maria Sharapova became the winner of Wimbledon. 20 years ago, a 17-year-old Russian defeated legendary American tennis player Serena Williams in the final of the competition with a score of 6:1, 6:4.
Maria Sharapova still remains the most successful tennis player in Russia. During her career, she won 39 WTA titles, including five Grand Slam titles. She helped the Russian team win the Fed Cup (2008) and also won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She ended her sports career in 2020.
