The American lost to Chinese Wang Xinyu in three sets
World No. 5 Jessica Pegula from the US has retired from singles competition Wimbledon 2024.
Pegula lost to Chinese in second round match Wang Xinyu (No. 42 in the WTA rankings). The match lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes.
The first set was won by Wang, 6-4. The fate of the second set was decided in a tie-break, with Pegula saving a match point at 6-7 and winning 9-7.
In the decisive set, Jessica failed to impose a fight on her Chinese opponent, giving up two games on her serve – 1:6. Recall that in 2023, Pegula reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. This is her best result in a grass Grand Slam tournament.
Xinyu defeated a top-10 ranked opponent for the first time in her career. The 22-year-old Chinese will play Harriet Dart of Great Britain in the next round.
Two Ukrainians, Dayana Yastremska and Marta Kostyuk, have reached the third round of Wimbledon 2024. Their success could be repeated by Daria Snigur and Elina Svitolina, who will play Jelena Ostapenko and Jule Niemeyer, respectively, in the 1/32 finals.
