Iga ends 21-match winning streak on Tour
World No. 1 Iga Shventek from Poland has retired from singles competition Wimbledon 2024 at the 1/16 final stage.
In the third round match, Sventek sensationally lost to a representative of Kazakhstan Yulia Putintseva (No. 35 in the WTA ranking). The tennis players spent 2 hours on the court.
In the first set, Iga made one break and won 6:3. In the second and third games, the Polish tennis player’s game did not go well. She won only three games and suffered a defeat – 1:6, 2:6.
This is Swiatek’s first defeat since April 20, 2024, when she lost to another representative of Kazakhstan, Elena Rybakina, in the semi-finals of the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart – 3:6, 6:4, 3:6. Thus, Iga broke her 21-match winning streak on Tour.
Swiatek’s best result at a grass major remains the quarter-finals in 2023.
Putintseva won her eighth match in a row. In June, she won the WTA 250 tournament in Birmingham. In the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon, Yulia will play 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia.
