After winning the French Open, Iga Swiatek skipped the grass tournaments before Wimbledon and, at TBS, she beat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-4 and Petra Martic 6-4, 6-3. The 23-year-old tennis player was the clear favorite in the confrontation with Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, but in the end she sensationally lost 6-3, 1-6, 2-6.
On the same day, another Wimbledon contender, Ons Jabeur, also left the tournament early. Jabeur finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022 and 2023 and was one of the favourites in 2024. Gill was seeded 10th and had little trouble early in the tournament, beating Moyuka Uchijima 6-3, 6-1 and American Robin Montgomery 6-1, 7-5. But in the third round, she lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 1-6, 6-7. A loss in the first week of Wimbledon gives other lower-ranked tennis players a chance to advance as far as possible in the tournament, especially since Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka withdrew before the tournament began, and defending champion and sixth seed Marketa Vondrousova was eliminated in the first round. Other top-ten seeds such as Jessica Pegula (No. 5), Zheng Qingwen (No. 8) and Maria Sakkari (No. 9) did not advance past the second round. This has created a situation in which at Wimbledon, at least four players will be making their first quarterfinal appearance.
After three rounds, only three WTA top 10 players remained at Wimbledon. Second seed Coco Gauff took full advantage of her relatively easy draw to eliminate Caroline Dolehide, Anka Todoni and Sonay Kartal. She will now face 19th seed Emma Navarro in the fourth round.
Fourth seed and 2022 champion Elena Rybakina defeated Elena-Gabriela Rus, Laura Siegemund and Caroline Wozniacki. The Kazakh tennis player will now meet 17th seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia.
The third tennis player in the top 10 is Jasmine Paolini, seeded seventh. The Italian has not dropped a set in beating Sara Sorribes Tormo, Griet Minnen and Bianca Andrescu. In the fourth round, she will face Madison Keys, seeded 12th and last year’s quarter-finalist.
