Schneider born on April 2, 2004 in Zhigulevsk, Samara region. At the age of nine, she moved from Togliatti, where she began playing tennis, to Moscow and in 2022 to the United States, where she entered the University of North Carolina.
Diana’s first coach was Sergei Konovalov, but she started playing tennis professionally at the age of eight with coach Samvel Minasyan already in Moscow. In 2019, the Russian admitted that she did not have a permanent coach and training base, which was the main reason for her continued training in the United States.
She really attracted attention in January 2018, when she became the winner of the Christmas Cup junior tennis tournament. She began to achieve her first serious successes on the international stage in 2021: she won the junior Wimbledon in doubles with Belarusian Kristina Dmitruk, and also reached the semifinals of the junior Roland Garros. And at the end of the season, she won the ITF title at a tournament in Antalya, Turkey.
2022 was a decisive year for her, during which many events took place. She started the season in 865th place in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking and finished in 182nd place, gaining almost 700 positions. At Wimbledon 2021, the tennis player added doubles victories at the Junior Australian Open and the US Open. It is worth noting that Diana won all three major titles with different partners: in Australia she played with American Claire Ngunu, in the United States with Czech Lucy Havlíčkova. Thanks to these victories, she reached second place in the ITF ranking.
In November, in Montevideo, Mexico, Diana won the WTA-125, an analogue of the Challenger. She also reached four ITF tournament finals, culminating in a 15-match winning streak and three trophies including the title in Istanbul.
In January 2023, 19-year-old Schneider made her debut on the professional circuit and was able to immediately overcome the qualifications at her first Australian Open. The Russian played very well, reaching the second round of the Australian Slam, where in a fierce three-set fight she lost to a player from the WTA top 10 – Greek Maria Sakkari. As a result, on January 30, Diana entered the top 100 tennis players in the world, rising to 94th place in the WTA rankings.
Also this summer, for the first time, she reached the semifinals of a WTA-250 level tournament in Hamburg, where she lost to Germany’s Noma Noa Akage, and in September in Ningbo, China, she reached the WTA-250 final (losing to Ons Jabeur of France). She ended the year finishing in the top 60 of the world rankings.
And already at the beginning of the 2024 season, the Russian won her first WTA title. At the tournament in Hua Hin (Thailand), she defeated former world number 2 Paulo Badosa, as well as all 3 seeds: Magda Linett, Wang Xinyu and last year’s champion Zhu Lin. Unfortunately, Diana is not happy with the Grand Slam tournaments this season: in Melbourne she lost in the first round to Jasmine Paolini, and in Paris to Chloe Paquet at the same stage.
Shortly before Roland Garros, Schneider won the WTA-125 in Paris. At the current stage of her career, such tournaments can no longer be considered, but the competitions were held on clay. And although the Russian is only 20 years old, she has the best winning percentage on clay.
Despite her young age and lack of great success, Schneider appears to be an accomplished tennis player. Diana’s style is strong and furious, built on a powerful left forehand and constant pressure. On the court, she is distinguished by her aggressive attacking style, emotionality (during a meeting at the Australian Open – 2023, Sakkari complained to the judge on the chair that her opponent was shouting right in her face) and … a scarf on her head, and the Russian woman made this accessory to order from a woman she knew. Interestingly, even at the junior level, Schneider was criticized by her rivals about her scarf and even abandoned it at one point.
Comment by the President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamilya Tarpishcheva for :
— Young and ambitious, fearless. It is important that Schneider plays the couple perfectly. He is very motorized, he pumps up all the time, he keeps the tempo of the game perfectly, these are his main advantages. We will not even talk about the long term, but Diana can do everything. It all depends on her. I am happy that she represents our team.
