Athletistic/ Tennis. In the semi-finals of Wimbledon, Russian Daniil Medvedev was unable to beat Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz defeated Medvedev in four sets with a score of 6:7 (1:7), 6:3, 6:4, 6:4. After the match, Carlos could not hold back his emotions. He compared Medvedev to a wall.
“It was difficult for me. I tried to calm down at the beginning of the second set, it helped me a lot to lead 3:1, after which I was able to show my game and enjoy the match a little more. I tried to hit good shots and moved well. Overall, I think I played a good match.
I tried to do different things. I tried not to play long rallies. I tried to make cut shots and short shots, and go to the net as often as possible. I tried not to play his game. There were several points with very long rallies. I tried to play my game, not to drag the rally out to more than 10-12 hits. It was hard to break through the wall.
“I feel like I’m not a rookie anymore. I know how I’m going to feel before the final. I’ve been in this position before. I’m going to try to do what I did well last year. I’m going to try to be better and do things that worked well,” Alcaraz said in an on-court interview.
Carlos Alcaraz, 21, has reached the Wimbledon final for the second time in a row, his fourth Grand Slam final in total.
Medvedev praised Alcaraz for his excellent tennis after the defeat.
“Tough match, Carlos played well. My game plan didn’t work too badly, the match was much closer than last year. But yeah, it’s tough to play against him. I served well, certainly not worse than in other matches. Only five aces, he seemed to reach almost every ball, he ran well, I had good shots, I could have taken points at the net somewhere, but it didn’t work out in my opinion, he played much better than the rest of my opponents here, that’s why I lost. There’s not much else to add.
It seems to me that in many rallies at the net, on the one hand, I could have played better. On the other hand, there are probably one, two, maybe three players – him, de Minaur and someone like Tommy Paul – who can get the kind of balls I sent. The volleys weren’t great. He’s just very fast and good at dribbling. It wasn’t planned to go to the net, but it’s a grass court. The plan wasn’t to give him too much time, because when he has time, he becomes a winner. Try to put pressure on him. I played well, but it still wasn’t enough against him.
We all have preferences. Some prefer defense, some prefer counterattacks, some prefer to play super-aggressive. He can do everything. Sometimes he can make a cut… Even a bad cut, and then he will run and try to win. Often, when an opponent does that, you can just throw a light punch and he will not want to attack. But not Carlos. If you throw a light punch at Carlos, you know it’s over for you. This is maybe the most difficult opponent I have faced in my career. But I have time to try to do more,” Medvedev said at the post-match press conference.
It is worth noting that Medvedev, after leaving Wimbledon 2024, will remain the fifth racket in the world. In the live ATP ranking, Medvedev is behind the fourth racket in the world, German Alexander Zverev, by 490 points.
Carlos Alcaraz will face Novak Djokovic in the 2024 Wimbledon final. Will the Spaniard manage to win the trophy for the second consecutive season?
