Athletistic/Tennis. Wimbledon this year has been full of big surprises, with the underdogs giving fans plenty to cheer about. In two weeks, there have been several sensational results.

Emil Ruusuvuori beat Stefanos Tsitsipas

Emil Ruusuvuori’s game, built around his serve and flat shots, has always been suited to grass. At Wimbledon this year, he knocked out Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Ruusuvuori won the tiebreakers to create a two-set lead over the Greek, but he was determined to mount a comeback. However, the Finnish player was able to extinguish Tsitsipas’ momentum and prevailed in four sets 7-6 (6), 7-6 (9), 3-6, 6-3.

Ruusuvuori, despite five wins against top-10 players, has never made it past the second round at a Grand Slam tournament. At Wimbledon, he made it to the third round, where he lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perrikar.

Emma Navarro beat Coco Gauff

After winning her first WTA title and reaching the top 20 in the first half of 2024, the American has now reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

At Wimbledon, Navarro defeated two Grand Slam winners at once. As impressive as her second-round win over Naomi Osaka was, it was her fourth-round victory over reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff that was the highlight. She now sits at a career-high No. 15 in the WTA rankings.

Yulia Putintseva defeated Iga Swiatek

Yulia Putintseva arrived at Wimbledon after winning her first grass court title in Birmingham.

And then she eliminated world number one Iga Swiatek. The Polish player has not lost a match since April and is focused on improving her result at Wimbledon. By the way, Putintseva herself has never crossed the line of the second round at a Grand Slam tournament on grass. Putintseva lost the first set, but then did something incredible. She won 12 of the last 14 games of the match in what can only be described as a rout.

Francisco Comesan defeated Andrey Rublev

Francisco Comesana never played in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. He played mainly on clay and grass was not a surface he played on very often.

But finally, in the first round of Wimbledon, Comesana defeated the world’s sixth-ranked player, Andrei Rublev. He served 21 aces, converted four of the five break chances he was given and won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5).

Lulu Sun defeated Zheng Qingwen

Like Comesana, Sun made her Wimbledon debut against world top 10 Zheng Qingwen. As a result, the New Zealander posted better return percentages against one of the best tennis servers on the WTA Tour, hit stronger shots on the rebound and took the initiative. Sun won in three sets and then reached the quarterfinals, becoming the biggest sensation of the women’s tournament. Before Wimbledon, Sun had only played one match in all of the Grand Slam tournaments.
