American tennis player Daniel Collins complained about the conditions at the Paris Olympic tournament, claiming she suffered heatstroke during the competition because of the fault of the organizers.
On Wednesday, Collins played her quarterfinal singles match against Polish world number one Iga Szwiatek. With a score of 1:4 in the third match, the American withdrew from the competition due to health problems.
– Of course, I feel very bad. Where to start? Yesterday I played a match for almost three hours at a temperature of +36 degrees Celsius. During the whole match I could not drink cool water. I overheated and had heatstroke. I almost lost consciousness when I left the court and lay on a medical massage table for three hours with convulsions all over my body, but I managed to finish the doubles match.
The conditions here were brutal. And I took a toll on it last night and today. It took a toll on my body. When you’re cramping from your toes all the way up to your neck, you get heat stroke, it’s very, very hard to get out of here. I also pulled my core. I did everything I could: put the tape on, worked with the physiotherapist… They did a very good job of getting me out there.
“Unbelievably disappointing. This is my first and last Olympics, and not having enough water on the field is very disappointing… I wish our health and safety was a higher priority,” Collins said at a news conference.
The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
