Medvedev on Shapovalov’s disqualification: “I am surprised by this decision. Did he intentionally hit someone with his racket?

Russian world number five Daniel Medvedev believes that the Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov does not deserve to be disqualified for the incident that occurred during the Washington tournament.

The quarterfinal match between Shapovalov and American Ben Shelton was stopped in the second set. After an unsuccessful rally, the Canadian threw his racket and got into a verbal altercation with one of the spectators, who allegedly used obscene language. The chair umpire called the supervisor and then decided to disqualify Shapovalov. The tennis player then swore at the supervisor.

“We definitely didn’t see what happened on TV.” But from what I heard, it warrants a warning, maybe a fine after the game. Disqualification? I didn’t see him insult the linesman. So I was very surprised to see that on the Internet. At first, I thought, ‘What did he do? Did he intentionally hit someone with his racket? He threw the racket and it hit someone?’

Nowadays, the ATP does some things well and some things badly. But I think they don’t know where they are going. They want to be a bit like Formula 1 and football. But in this case, don’t ask players to remain players and be “robots” while there is a circus and a show around them. It is necessary to explain to players what can be done and what cannot be done,” Open Court quotes Medvedev.

After Shapovalov’s appeal, the ATP decided to keep his ranking points and prize money for the Washington tournament. The Canadian will, however, have to pay a $36,400 fine.
