Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov made a statement following the disqualification at the Washington tournament.
The quarterfinal match between Shapovalov and American Ben Shelton was stopped in the second set. After an unsuccessful rally, the Canadian threw his racket and got into a verbal altercation with one of the spectators, who allegedly used obscene language. The chair umpire called the supervisor and then decided to disqualify Shapovalov. Then the tennis player himself swore at the supervisor.
“I continue to be surprised and disappointed by the decision to disqualify me from the match against Ben in Washington. It was unfair to me, to him and to everyone who came to see the match.
Of course, I immediately appealed to the ATP and I am happy and grateful that my ranking points and prize money were promptly returned.
However, I have to say that I do not agree with the large fine I received – it was more than half of the prize money I won last week. And I will continue to contest it.
We all work incredibly hard, for us our tennis career is our life and should not be disrupted by unnecessary and subjective decisions. And I hope that the ATP will establish rules that will protect players from attacks by fans,” Shapovalov wrote on the social network.
After Shapovalov’s appeal, the ATP decided to keep his ranking points and prize money for the Washington tournament. The Canadian will, however, have to pay a $36,400 fine.
