Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev admitted that for several years he struggled with depression and suffered from serious mental problems.
Rublev beats Italian world number one Jannik the fisherman in the quarterfinals of the Masters in Montreal with a score of 6:3, 1:6, 6:2. This season, the Russian, ranked eighth in the world, has won 28 matches and lost 15. At the moment, this is the worst ratio among the top 10 players.
“Psychologically, it was a difficult time, I was very disorganized. I struggled with depression for years, I faced many problems off the field and I ended up being very exhausted. This season I exploded, especially on the field.
“Luckily, I’ve been feeling better for a few weeks and my tennis is back to normal. I’m very happy because this victory gives me a lot of confidence. It’s great to see myself in the semi-finals of a big tournament again. In tennis, you have to constantly fight with yourself, that’s what makes this sport so special. Today I had a very good feeling and I was able to play an important match for myself,” Rublev said, as quoted by Puntodebreak.com.
In the semi-final, the Russian will face the Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
