Athletes represent what is on the heart, not the name on the back. This principle has always been in sport. I am very happy that Daniel knows how to play tennis well, that he is the first racket in the world, as a person he can be proud of. But we are talking about patriotic education. An athlete primarily personifies his country, and it is unacceptable to change the flag of his state. I think 90% of the people of our country will agree with me.

If we talk about international competitions, we have to draw attention to those guys who didn’t give up their country, their flag. I’m talking about Ivan Kulyak, Zhenya Rylov, for example, and there are a huge number of such examples. If there is no flag of their state, it is unacceptable for them to perform without it, and this position commands respect from me as a citizen of the Russian Federation.

But as soon as the rights of a group of liberal-minded citizens are violated and you start saying something they don’t want to hear, you get a lot of criticism. Apparently they can only say what they want to hear. And we are in Russia, that will never happen. We have to listen to the opinion of the majority.

Daniil Medvedev is undoubtedly the most talented athlete, the leader of world tennis. But I can’t say that he glorifies Russia by winning tournaments. He glorifies his name, he earns money. There is probably right. But this man who glorifies Russia must not be made a hero. We are ready to rejoice in his victories as well as the victories of our other tennis players. We understand that our entire national team is suspended from tennis tournaments. In tennis, in fact, we don’t exist now. If Medvedev, having won the tournament now, raises the Russian flag, it will be an act. But I’m afraid that as soon as he raises the Russian flag, he won’t participate in these tournaments. That’s why he changed the Russian flag on his avatar.

We understand that tennis is an Olympic sport, it is growing in our country, but it has never been massive, but has always been elitist. Mass sports are judo, sambo, football, hockey, sports practiced by millions of children. I did not see playing tennis in the courts. But we do not minimize the merits of Shamil Anvyarovich Tarpishchev and Daniil Medvedev as a coach and athlete. But you represent your country, be proud of your country and there will be no questions.
